BROKEN TRANSMISSION EARS?
If you’ve ever gone for a perfect downshift in your BMW E36 or E46 and somehow ended up fighting the shifter—or worse, missing the gear completely—you’ve probably blamed the transmission, shifter linkage, or maybe even yourself.
The reality is that one of the most common causes of missed shifts isn’t inside the transmission at all.
It’s drivetrain movement.
This is a problem we see all the time on track cars, especially E36 and E46 BMWs driven hard.
Before we dive deeper, watch Tony Salloum from VAC Motorsports explain why traditional solid transmission mounts can preload the transmission housing, contribute to broken transmission ears, and cause shifting issues on BMW E36 and E46 track cars.
Quick Answer: Yes. Worn factory transmission mounts can contribute to drivetrain movement and missed shifts. Improperly installed solid mounts can also introduce stress into the transmission housing. VAC’s Adjustable Transmission Mounts help eliminate drivetrain movement while allowing proper load distribution across both mounting points.
The factory BMW transmission mounts are made from rubber. That’s great for keeping noise and vibration out of the cabin, but it’s not ideal when you’re trying to drive consistently at the limit.
Under hard acceleration, braking, and cornering, the drivetrain moves around much more than most people realize.
When the transmission moves, the relationship between the shifter and transmission changes. That can lead to vague shifts, difficulty finding gears, and those frustrating moments when the shifter doesn’t end up where you expected it to.
The harder you drive the car, the more noticeable it becomes.
Yes, but that’s where another problem often shows up.
Most solid transmission mounts on the market are built with both sides at exactly the same height. On paper, that sounds correct.
In reality, it can create a problem.
BMW transmissions aren’t always positioned identically from side to side. Manufacturing tolerances, engine mounts, transmission crossmembers, chassis age, and previous repairs can all affect alignment.
When you install a pair of fixed-height solid mounts, it’s very easy to preload one side more than the other.
That’s where trouble starts.
Tony explains this in the video using a simple example.
Your engine is already supported by two engine mounts.
Those two mounts establish the drivetrain’s position.
Once you add the transmission mounts, you’re introducing additional support points. If one side is carrying more load than the other, you’re effectively forcing the transmission housing into a position it doesn’t naturally want to be in.
We’ve seen plenty of cracked transmission ears and broken mounting tabs over the years because of this exact issue.
It’s surprisingly common on E36 and E46 track cars running solid mounts.
Many years ago, we decided there had to be a better solution.
Instead of using two fixed-height mounts, VAC Motorsports designed an adjustable transmission mount that allows each side to be fine-tuned during installation.
As Tony demonstrates, the mount can be adjusted upward until it just contacts the mounting surface. This allows both sides to share the load evenly instead of forcing one side to carry more weight than the other.
Once everything is tightened down, the transmission is properly supported without introducing unnecessary stress into the housing.
It’s a simple idea, but it solves a problem many enthusiasts don’t even realize exists.
Beyond helping reduce stress on the transmission housing, the adjustable design offers several advantages:
Most importantly, you’re addressing the root cause of the problem rather than simply making everything stiffer.
Let’s be honest.
These are performance parts designed for enthusiasts who prioritize drivetrain control over comfort.
Because they’re machined from solid 6061-T6 billet aluminum, you’ll feel more vibration and hear more drivetrain noise than you would with factory rubber mounts.
That’s completely normal.
For track cars, race cars, Time Attack builds, and serious HPDE cars, it’s usually a tradeoff owners are happy to make.
VAC Adjustable Transmission Mounts fit:
If your BMW feels vague during shifting, if you’ve experienced missed gears at the track, or if you’re upgrading to solid drivetrain mounts, don’t overlook the importance of proper transmission support.
The goal isn’t simply to eliminate movement.
The goal is to eliminate movement without introducing stress where it doesn’t belong.
That’s exactly why VAC Adjustable Transmission Mounts were developed.
Sometimes the best solutions aren’t the most complicated ones—they’re simply the result of understanding the problem better than everyone else.
